In-N-Out shifts key operations from California to Tennessee

Lynsi Snyder, president and owner of In-N-Out Burger, has confirmed she is relocating from California to Tennessee as part of a broader corporate transition for the family-run fast-food chain. The move aligns with the development of a new office in Franklin, Tennessee, which will serve as a co-headquarters alongside the company’s longtime base in Baldwin Park, California. In a recent media engagement, Snyder, 43, cited concerns about public safety, business regulations, and quality of life as reasons for the decision.

She stated that while California holds personal significance, raising a family and operating a business in the state have become increasingly difficult. Her departure marks a major shift for the brand, which has been headquartered in California since it was founded by her grandparents, Harry and Esther Snyder, in 1948. The announcement follows several operational changes by In-N-Out in response to conditions in California.

In 2024, the company permanently closed its Oakland restaurant due to escalating crime, a first in its decades-long history. The company also experienced temporary shutdowns in San Francisco in 2021 after refusing to enforce local COVID-19 mandates, citing concerns about overregulation and customer experience. Despite the expansion into Tennessee, Snyder clarified that In-N-Out is not exiting California.

Instead, it will consolidate its two Southern California offices by relocating operations from Irvine back to Baldwin Park. The company’s Irvine site, established by Snyder’s uncle Rich Snyder in the 1990s, is expected to close by 2030. Snyder explained that the move fulfills a long-held vision by her late father, Gary Snyder, who believed the brand’s identity was more closely tied to its original Baldwin Park location.

Construction on the new Franklin facility began in September 2023, with plans to open the office and the state’s first In-N-Out restaurant by 2026. At the groundbreaking ceremony, Snyder highlighted Tennessee’s alignment with the company’s values, including a strong focus on service, family, and quality. Currently, In-N-Out operates more than 400 restaurants across  California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, Texas, Oregon, Colorado, and Idaho.

Expansion to Tennessee aligns with In-N-Out’s supply strategy

Although there has been substantial public interest in further expansion, Snyder confirmed that the company will not be entering East Coast markets. She noted that supply chain logistics remain a key factor, with Tennessee being the easternmost state the company can serve from its existing Texas warehouse. In-N-Out, which remains privately owned by the Snyder family, has also taken active positions on various political and regulatory issues in California.

Between 2022 and 2024, the company contributed $12.8 million to campaigns opposing mandatory wage increases in the fast-food sector and has supported public safety legislation. Snyder and her husband, Sean Ellingson, also oversee philanthropic initiatives addressing addiction and human trafficking, consistent with the company’s Christian values. – By Content Syndication Services.
